Web Design vs Content
Just to add another thought. Try visiting the site http://www.elenafilatova.com . I guess this really isn't all that clever in terms of web design but - here is the rub - it used to be much worse! When this site first went public it was hosted by angelfire and consisted simply of scrolling screens containing images and text. At the base of each screen was a link either back to the previous page or on to the next page. No index, introduction or real structure. BUT - In the first few days after it was posted this site was receiving over 100 hits worldwide every 2-3 seconds!
Clue to success - CONTENT! A good product sells itself!

Can I comment again on my own post? Here goes! I just found an old favourite of mine - it's just nice to find something meaningful on web design NOT written by Neilson!!!! It's called "Don't Make me think. - A commonsense approach to web design." - by Steve Krug. Similar to Neilson the term 'usability' comes up rather often but mostly with reference to navigation. I read only quotations and an abstract but it seems this author is very much audience centred - suggesting that user tests need not be carried out using carefully selected groups but in fact using your target audience. Also, I quote, "If your audience is going to act like you're designing billboards, then design great billboards." Similar to previous comments I made - the customer is king - but you must know who your customer is!
Another comment on my own post - come on where are you all??
That site I mentioned? Well, within 3 weeks it got so busy it actually crashed the angefire server it was on and had to switch to another provider. No statistics are admitted for the hit rate at that point but I guess it must have been massive. CONTENT!
Ric, Is this near Bromyard?
I have looked at the site, its very basic in fact more basic than mine!
Although I should not criticise
Tried it a few times sometimes the pics do not load, guess this is the server!
Rating 1.5 and only because Tim fancy's her !
Think the site is very boring and plan.
2/5
Because unlike steve i wouldn't give her 1 ;)
The mark was 1.5 !
Sorry! Not getting 100% attention to my stuff either(mentioned "Don't Make Me Think" on 5th Feb, though only in passing) grumble, moan...but we're all busy...and MANY thanks for the tip about Streamline - only just got set up so early days but already impressively fast service and tech support. Thanks also for pointing out this site - design-wise a bit flaky but in some ways stumbling around it adds to the fascination - perfect illustration of content vs design. considerations. Oid give it foive, and I'd boy it. (Juke Box Jury, anyone?)
